Project Updates

We are excited to share key developments, upcoming milestones, and ways for the community to stay involved as we continue to make progress on this transformative NYC initiative. This section of our website will be updated monthly by our project team to keep you and our neighbors up to date as we begin constructing a new gateway into our city!

The Terminal is a Regional Cornerstone

The current bus terminal services over 250,000 daily commuters and that number is only expected to grow in the near future. By 2040, that number will be over 330,000. The existing terminal is already operating beyond its capacity and is limited by several factors. Use the map on the right to see just how far commuters travel every day to the bus terminal. The map also shows some of the further points of connection the terminal provides. It even goes all the way north to Canada!

Our Region is Growing Fast - Our Infrastructure Must Meet Future Demand

This trans-Hudson commuting pattern is quickly growing. New York City is experiencing job growth while New Jersey is experiencing growth in housing supply. Over time, the Midtown Bus Terminal will only become even an even more important piece of infrastructure to support the region.

What Commuters will Notice

  • An entirely new 2.1 million square foot facility
  • More space for buses to meet future demand
  • Modern amenities for an enhanced passenger experience
  • Better subway access and improved wayfinding
  • Fully ADA-accessible
  • Service will continue throughout construction

What Community will Notice

  • No idling buses on city streets

  • Less congestion and pollution in nearby neighborhoods

  • Inspiring public art

  • Safer, more walkable streets with active retail

  • Best in class architecture
  • 3+ acres of public open space
  • Outward-facing local retail will benefit commuters and the community alike

Project Highlights

Phase 1A - Dyer Deckovers

The Lincoln Tunnel Expressway is about to look very different! We continue to make strides to reunite portions of the community that the original expressway separated. Our team began the installation of steel beams across portions of the expressway. These beams will support the deck over structure which will be used for bus operations in the interim. However, the Port Authority will ultimately convert this area into a publicly accessible open space. See the images on the right for a diagram showing the upcoming steel beams placement and a rendering of the final condition.

Phase 1B - Storage and Staging Facility and Ramps

As we kick-off the Storage and Staging Facility, the project area will begin to take shape between 39th and 40th St. and 11th to 10th Ave. We will be placing Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) barriers to ensure the cars, pedestrians, and bikes are able to continue traveling through the area. We are committed to keeping the community informed as a key stakeholder as we continue developing this critical gateway and economic driver for our city and the neighborhood. Stay tuned for more details on how we plan to ensure the project area continues to be a hustling and bustling part of midtown Manhattan!

Construction Updates

The Construction Task Force is a group comprised of community and government organizations that are impacted by our project area. We convene this group once a month to provide updates on our progress and give a heads up for construction that we expect to begin soon. Construction, especially in an area as dense as Midtown Manhattan, often is difficult to predict so we try our best to provide the neighborhood with updates through this task force, our community advisories, and our mailing list. If you have any questions or concerns, our project team stands ready to provide you with answers!
