Storage & Staging Facility

The Storage and Staging facility (SSF) of the new Midtown Bus Terminal will replace the current street-level bus parking facilities located throughout Manhattan’s west side with a modern five-story steel-clad structure that will provide indoor space for every bus that uses the terminal. This facility will serve as a connector between the new main terminal, the new ramp structure and the Lincoln Tunnel.

Currently, commuter buses must park or idle on city streets, scattered surface level parking lots, or drive back to New Jersey empty because there is not enough room to park and wait for the next peak commuter period to begin. The new facility's design will accommodate the projected commuter growth for decades to come, reducing the impact on the community, Manhattan streets, improving commuter reliability, and operational flexibility. During the construction of the new Main Terminal, this facility will  serve as a temporary bus terminal. To support operations during this period, it will work in tandem with the two new Dyer Avenue deck-overs, which will provide additional space for bus staging and passenger services.

A Smarter, More Efficient Home for Buses

The project aims to create a modern facility with enough room to meet current and future demand for bus storage and staging. The new structure will:

  • Reduce buses from circulating on city streets.
  • Reside between 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue between 39th and 40th Streets.
  • Provide five floors of storage space for up to 350 buses.
  • Feature 65,700 square feet of street-facing retail space with a design that expresses the neighborhood's tenement-style buildings.
  • Serve as a temporary bus terminal for commuters during the construction of the Main Terminal.
  • Be part of Phase 1, with construction anticipated to start in late 2025 and be completed by 2028.
