The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has created a Vision Plan to reimagine Newark Liberty International Airport as a world-class facility that sets a global standard.
The Vision Plan emphasizes EWR's importance as the primary international gateway for New Jersey. It is a roadmap for reimagining the airport as a world-class facility that meets the growing needs of passengers, airlines, and the surrounding communities. The Vision Plan builds on the success of recent developments while introducing new solutions to address congestion, outdated facilities, and the demand for sustainable operations. The plan proposes a multi-phase approach for short-, medium-, and long-term development of the airport.
The Port Authority developed the Vision Plan through an iterative process that started by taking inventory of EWR's existing facilities and operations to identify challenges and establish guidelines. They used aviation forecasts to calculate facility requirements and created conceptual layouts and implementation plans to accommodate them. Developing the Vision Plan also included extensive local community outreach and more than 200 stakeholder meetings.
From following a multi-phase development plan to minimize the impact on airport operations and customers to creating a memorable, locally driven, world-class customer experience, the Vision Plan has set goals to guide the airport's development.
Building a World-Class Airport for the Future
The opening of the new Terminal A in 2023 was a giant first step in addressing the challenges and transforming Newark Liberty. The award-winning terminal represents a glimpse into the future of what EWR will become. Ongoing projects include the replacement of the EWR AirTrain and the Newark Station Access Project. Future development will continue to put EWR on a path to becoming a world-class airport that sets a new standard for passenger experience, operational efficiency, and sustainability.
