Investing in 21st-century infrastructure
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is making historic investments to deliver a 21st-century travel experience across its airports, bridges, tunnels, trains, ports, and bus terminals.
As part of its transformative efforts, the agency is leading the $19 billion rebuild of JFK Airport into a world-class gateway and has completed Newark Liberty International Airport’s new Terminal A, which opened in 2023 to global acclaim, earning the title of Best New Airport Terminal in the World by Skytrax, a global aviation ratings firm. Additionally, the agency is replacing the outdated AirTrain Newark and implementing the EWR Vision Plan to reimagine Newark Liberty International Airport. The Port Authority also recently completed an entirely new LaGuardia Airport, named the 2024 Best U.S. Airport by Forbes Travel Guide, and is progressing on the multi-phase replacement of the Midtown Bus Terminal while maintaining existing operations.
This once-in-a-generation overhaul of the region’s infrastructure is strengthening global competitiveness, creating tens of thousands of well-paying local jobs, and improving the travel experience for hundreds of millions of people each year.
LaGuardia Airport
LaGuardia Airport has been transformed into a world-class facility offering a 21st-century passenger experience with modern amenities, state-of-the-art architecture, more spacious gate areas, and a unified terminal system. Once regarded as the worst airport in the nation, it is now considered the best, receiving prestigious accolades globally since its complete rebuild. Among these honors, it was named the 2024 Best U.S. Airport by Forbes Travel Guide, based on a survey of 5,000 global travel experts.
Newark Liberty International Airport
The Port Authority is in the midst of a complete redevelopment of Newark Liberty International Airport that began with the 2023 opening of Terminal A – the centerpiece of an airport-wide renaissance designed to establish the airport as a world-class gateway for the New Jersey and New York region. The airport’s redevelopment is outlined in the agency’s EWR Vision plan to accommodate future growth and deliver a world-class air travel experience from curb to gate.
Midtown Bus Terminal
The new Midtown Bus Terminal will replace the existing 74-year-old, functionally obsolete and rundown terminal with a long-overdue world-class facility. The Port Authority has secured all the needed permits to move forward with replacing the agency’s long-outdated bus terminal and enduring eyesore in the middle of Manhattan with the world-class transportation gateway this region has long deserved. The $10 billion world-class facility will include a new 2.1 million square-foot main terminal, a separate storage and staging building and new ramps leading directly into and out of the Lincoln Tunnel.
The project plan — including the permanent closure of a portion of 41st Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues, a central main entrance, more street-facing retail, a soaring multi-story indoor atrium and new public open space — will enhance both the commuter experience at the world’s busiest bus terminal and the community surrounding the facility.
